Industrial Coupling

Flexible Gear Coupling

A flexible gear coupling is a mechanical device designed to transmit high torque between two shafts that are not perfectly aligned. It is considered one of the most power-dense coupling types, meaning it can handle massive amounts of force relative to its physical size.

Unlike a “rigid” coupling, which requires perfect alignment, a flexible gear coupling can “bend” slightly to accommodate small errors in positioning without breaking.

Jaw Coupling Spider

A flexible jaw coupling is a power transmission coupling that falls under the “material flexing” category. It is one of the most widely used couplings in the world because it is simple, cost-effective, and remarkably forgiving of minor installation errors.

As we touched on with the “Spider” earlier, the jaw coupling is a three-piece assembly designed to connect two shafts while protecting the machinery from vibration and misalignment.

Hydax Gear Couplings

A Hydax gear coupling (frequently called a Hydax Flexible Drive Coupling) is a specific brand of nylon-sleeve gear coupling. It is a popular choice for hydraulic systems and light-to-medium industrial power transmission.

While the “flexible gear coupling” we discussed earlier usually involves heavy steel sleeves and grease, the Hydax design is a lubrication-free alternative that uses a high-grade plastic sleeve.

Pin Bush Coupling

A pin bush coupling (or pin and bush coupling) is a variation of the flexible flange coupling, designed to handle high torque while absorbing significant shock loads and vibration.

It is a “fail-safe” coupling often used in heavy-duty industrial applications where a motor is connected to a gearbox or a large pump.

Tyre Coupling

A tyre coupling (or tire coupling) is a highly flexible, “material-flexing” coupling that uses a reinforced rubber or urethane element shaped like a tire to connect two shafts.

It is widely considered the “king of misalignment” because its thick, flexible walls can handle far more shaft movement than jaw, gear, or pin-bush couplings.

Rubber Spider

In the world of industrial power transmission, aRubber Spider  is essentially another name for the Flexible Jaw Coupling we discussed earlier. It gets its name from the shape of the central elastomer insert, which looks like a multi-pointed star.

It is a simple, three-piece coupling designed for light-to-medium torque applications where ease of maintenance and vibration dampening are the priorities.
