A plug valve is a quarter-turn manual valve that uses a cylindrical or tapered “plug” to start or stop fluid flow. If a globe valve is a dimmer switch, a plug valve is a heavy-duty on/off toggle.

It is one of the oldest valve designs in existence—dating back to ancient Roman plumbing—but it remains a staple in harsh industrial environments today.
